The Jubilee Fund Annual Meeting 2010

The Jubilee Fund held their Eleventh Annual Meeting on March 24th, 2010 at St. Mary Magdalene Church. A record turn-out of members, loan guarantee recipients and guests were in attendance.

Two of our loan guarantee recipients spoke on how support from the Jubilee Fund enabled them to proceed with their development plans.

Rob Neufeld, Executive Director of the North End Renewal Corporation started his presentation with the burning of his mortgage with the Jubilee Fund. In March 2005, the Jubilee Fund guaranteed a loan that enabled NECRC to purchase a building located at 510 Selkirk Avenue. The building was completely renovated inside and out and converted to the Murdo Scribe Centre where the Aboriginal Educational Directorate is providing training and education services to the people living in the north end. The mortgage was paid in full on March 1st, 2010.

The second group of speakers were Tabitha Langel and Lyle Barkman from Tall Grass Prairie Bread & Deli. Tabitha gave an overview of the careful planning that went into the expansion of their 859 Westminister location, which included their meeting with the neighbourhood community, concern with protecting the original stone building that was more than 100 years old, using recycled lumber from the old Winnipeg Arena and installing a geothermal heating and cooling system.

The Jubilee Fund Annual Meeting 2009

Neither snow nor sleet could stop fifty-three members and friends from attending The Jubilee Fund Inc.'s Tenth Annual Meeting on March 25, 2009, held at the Missionary Oblate Sisters of St. Boniface Auditorium.

Guest Speaker, Mike Wolchock, store manager for Pollock's Hardware Co-op Ltd. was the guest speaker.  He gave an account of the amazing journey of Pollock's Hardware Co-op from the initial meeting that took place with a few community members trying to find a way to save their neighbourhood store to the success it is today. Their initial plans had budgeted for 200 - 300 members by the end of 2008; the actual number was more than 900! It was a good news story that took the imagination of the media with publicity being generated across Canada.

The Jubilee Fund was pleased to be a part of their success.

John Schwandt was elected for his third term as President; Debra Zier Vogel was elected as Treasurer and Neil Childs was elected as Vice President. In addition four new Directors were elected to the Jubilee Fund Board.  They were Marlene Couglin; Rev. William Gillis; Father Jean-Paul Isabelle and Sister Juliette Thevenot.

The Fund bid farewell to outgoing Directors Sister Josephine Chudzik; Doug Mackie; Anna Normandeau and Janelle Siemens.
