A Message Presented to the Eighth Annual Meeting from the Outgoing President, Gabriel Dufault
It has been an exciting two years that I have served as your President. During that time we said good-bye to Terry Terichow and welcomed Cordell Jacks as a member of our staff.
This past year we hired a consultant to review the Jubilee Fund’s operations with the emphasis on marketing and fund raising. As government funding is being phased out, we need to become more sustainable. The study recommended that in addition to our traditional sources of funding from the faith communities and their members we increase our funding from the business community and foundations. In addition, we will be asking individuals to consider the Jubilee Fund in their wills through bequests or insurance proceeds. This is a major challenge that your Board and Staff are prepared to tackle. At the same time, I challenge all our members and friends to continue their support of our organization both financially and in recommending new projects that we can support.
In 2005, the Jubilee Fund held their first Art and Antique Auction. It was a great success and has now become an annual fund raising event. All donors are listed in the Annual Report. However, I wish to thank Assiniboine Credit Union for being a major sponsor; The Oblate Sisters of St. Boniface for donating the use of their auditorium; the many organizations and individuals who have donated art and antique items; the individuals who attend and purchase these items and the volunteers who work very hard to make it a success. In 2006, as a second fund raiser the Jubilee Fund hosted “The Sisters of the Holy Rock”. It was unfortunate that the event was held on the first snow storm of the season. However, everyone who attended was most pleased with the evening.
In November, the Jubilee Fund was able to make a major equity investment in Neechi Foods Inc. This was made possible due to a generous donation made to the Jubilee Fund by a member of the business community. The equity investment allowed Neechi Foods to pay off a debt and has given them a better financial position. While the Jubilee Fund has always been able to make equity investments; this was our first such investment.
In January of this year, I was pleased to participate in the signing of a agreement with the principals of C.H.A.M. Inc. They have folded their operation and turned over the amount of $345,004 in cash and investments to the Jubilee Fund, with the stipulation that this money be used for low-income housing projects. This money will be shown as a Capital Investment Fund in our financial statements. I wish to publicly thank Bill Halpenny, Neil Childs and Brian Squire for showing confidence in the work being done by the Jubilee Fund.
We had three Directors leave our Board this year. Mike McSween resigned from the Board of Directors due to his five month annual winter holiday in Mexico. Mike has promised that when he is in Winnipeg he will be most pleased to serve on Committees or wherever he is needed. Marie Halkewycz due to ill health had to resign early in the year. Marie is in our prayers and we wish her a speedy recovery. Maureen Pendergast has chosen not to stay on the Board due to the hectic schedule she has with her construction company.
The Jubilee Fund has been most fortunate to have the support of the Government of Manitoba through the Intergovernmental Affairs and Trade, Urban Strategic Initiatives. I wish to single out Irene Kamchen, Coordinator of the Social Economy and Community Development for her support and assistance. My thanks to the Minister, the Hon. Steve Ashton for attending and speaking at our Annual Meeting.
I want to thank the Board of Directors for the guidance and support they have given me this past year. A special mention to Past President Sister Jean Ell who was always willing to give me advise and support. Finally, to our staff who keep it all together. Thank You.
The future for the Jubilee Fund is bright. It has its challenges but with your support I know it will continue to grow.
