Janelle Siemens
Janelle Siemens has been with the Mennonite Central Committee (Manitoba) since 2001. MCC is a Christian relief and development agency that works in North America and overseas. The MCC programs in Manitoba support prisoners during their incarceration and after they are released, people with FASD, people with mental and physical disabilities, and refugees. MCC also partners with local organizations, placing service workers to work with them as they provide services. Janelle’s title was Human Resources Assistant Coordinator. Her responsibilities in Human Resources entail screening the volunteers who come to MCC wanting to do service work either locally or overseas.
Janelle is originally from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. She moved to Manitoba in 1997. During her time at the University of Saskatchewan, Janelle was contemplating a career in Education. Not certain that education was her real calling she accepted a position in Swaziland, Africa to teach English. During that year, she lived with an African family and had the opportunity to learn some Siswati. It proved to be a tremendous learning experience. At the end of the year, Janelle decided teaching was not her calling. She returned to Winnipeg and enrolled at the University of Winnipeg where she graduated with a degree in Conflict Resolution and International Development Studies.
It was at the University of Winnipeg that Janelle first heard about the millennium Jubilee initiative. When she came to MCC, she was excited to learn that the Jubilee Fund had become involved with community economic development. Janelle joined the Jubilee Board in 2004 and commented on the appreciation she has for the work done by the volunteers who are very passionate about a moral economy and have an interfaith approach to CED. Janelle was elected Vice President in September 2005. She resigned from the Executive at the Annual Meeting in March, 2009 due to the immediate arrival of her first child.
In her private life, Janelle is married and they have one child. She enjoys camping, canoeing, gardening and reading. Janelle is working to complete her Human Resources diploma at the University of Manitoba.
