Winner of Toyota 2008 Never Quit Award
Doug Mackie
Recently Doug Mackie was presented with a Community Service Award in the Toyota 2008 Never Quit Awards program. The annual awards program recognizes and celebrates those individuals whose tenacity, dedication and perseverance has improved their life and the lives of others. The Community Service Award honours individuals who have contributed time, effort and dedication to make their communities a better place to live.
Of 1,300 nominations for the 2008 awards, a total of six awards were presented – one in each category for all three Prairie provinces. Each recipient received $5,000 and a Wayne Townsend of Frontier Toyota, Rita Borthwick & Doug Mackie
commemorative plaque, plus Toyota made a $1,500 donation to a non-profit organization of their choice. Doug chose the Jubilee Fund to receive a $500 donation with the balance given to St. James/Assiniboine 55+ Centre where he is involved in the men’s cooking club and Mensheds. Both programs focus on activities for senior men.
Doug served as a Member of the Jubilee Fund Inc. Board from 2004 - 2009, as Chairperson of the Fundraising Committee and the Credit Committee. He continues to serve as a member of the Credit committee.
“The Never Quit Awards” are Toyota’s way of recognizing individuals who help make our communities stronger and best personify the never quit spirit of the Prairies,” says Ron Ball, President of the Toyota Dealers Advertising Association, Prairie Zone. “We continue to be amazed and inspired by the stories of perseverance we receive.”
Ron commented that Doug starts every day with the aim to make at least one person smile. Having endured illness in his youth, and surviving cancer in his adult life, his passion for life extends to everyone he meets and permeates everything he does. He has been a volunteer for over 45 years, and always has several different projects on the go. He enjoys sharing his passion for reading and literacy as a volunteer story teller, visiting daycares, youth groups, schools and seniors centres to tell stories. Through his church, he has been instrumental in helping a Colombian refugee family to adjust to their new life in Winnipeg. He is an extremely generous and energetic man, whose truest joy is giving.
