King’s Park Day Care Centre Inc. - Part 2

Increased Demand Results in Second Expansion

Kings Park Day Care Centre Inc. (KPDCC) has been in operation for 24 years providing child care services to low income students, newcomers and low-income families in the Fort Richmond area.  The daycare is currently licensed for 59 children:  27 school age and 32 preschool spaces.  In 2008, the Jubilee Fund provided funding for an expansion which will allow for 15 more spaces for school age children bringing the total licensed spaces to 74.

Currently operating from a strip-mall type building, the daycare expanded into space which was previously occupied by an insurance agency. They renovated the new space to accommodate the additional children and renovated their existing space to satisfy new fire safety requirements.

In 2006, a study done by the Child Care Coalition of Manitoba indicated 80% of the childcare centres in Manitoba surveyed have a waiting list. While the additional spaces will help children in the Fort Richmond area, more needs to be done.

KPDCC is a not for profit organization. Since 1981, the centre has been managed by a volunteer Board of Directors comprising of parents and community members. Executive Director, Dawn Forbes has been with the centre since 1984 and provides strong leadership to the centre and the board. In 2004, the Jubilee Fund was pleased to assist with their first expansion.
