North Kildonan Little Thinkers

John Schwandt and Rita Borthwick attended the North Kildonan Little Thinkers Inc. daycare Grand Opening in September, 2006.  Parents, future daycare attendees and older brothers and sisters were in attendance to play with the new equipment and taste the delicious food that was prepared.

Little Thinkers is a brand new daycare facility.  It is open from 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and accepts children ages two - six years old.  Presently, more than half of the thirty-six children attending the daycare come from low-income families.

Margaret Umbach is the Executive Director and worked on this project for more than two years.  In doing her research for this project, Marg identified only one daycare in the vicinity and it had a long wait list.  Terry Terichow, the Alternate Risk Manager at the Jubilee Fund assisted Marg in identifying various sources of support.  Thelma Randall, Executive Director of the Cornish Child Care Centre Inc. also provided great assistance to Marg in working with contractors and granting agencies.

The Daycare was able to receive grants and donations from the Manitoba Community Places, the Thomas Sill Foundation and the Kiwanis Foundation.  The Jubilee Fund Inc. provided a loan guarantee to the North Kildonan Little Thinkers daycare to assist with the renovation costs and leasehold improvements.
