Aboriginal Youth Involvement Project

The Elmwood Community Resource Centre contacted the Jubilee Fund for intern financing

for their Aboriginal Youth Involvement Project. The program was funded in 2010-11 by Heritage Canada under the Canadian Aboriginal Peoples Program.  In 2011, they were told they could not advise them officially of their funding until six months after the program  was to have started.  As a small non-profit, they were unable to carry the financial responsibility, so they turned to the Jubilee Fund for help.

The Aboriginal Youth Involvement Program is cultural based and provides wilderness survival programming and other activities for youth between the ages of ten to twenty-one. David Delorme is the Project Coordinator with Vanessa Koch as the assistant. Leon Laquette and Shannon Buck are the Cultural Advisors. Thirty-five youth registered for the program this summer. While the majority of youth are aboriginal, no one is turned away, all are encouraged to participate.

In reviewing their August program, a number of activities took place including teaching the Seven Sacred Laws, the POW WOW Club, wall climbing, Sundance teachings, fishing,  Dream Catchers, canoe lessons, an aboriginal language program and traditional cooking. In addition a day was spent at Camp Manitou, and they visited the First Nations Pavilion at Forklorama and the Manitoba Museum. ECRC would like to offer  more activities outside the city, but are unable due to transportation costs. The summer calendar concluded with a Community BBQ that provided lots of fun for young and old alike with free food and entertainment.

The Elmwood Community Resource Centre has 27,000 people that come through their doors each year. In addition to the Youth Drop-in Centre and their numerous activities, they are involved in assisting the community. In the winter of 2010-11, Richlu Sportswear Ltd. donated coats, scarves and mitts to needy families in the community. ECRC assisted with the distribution.

The Elmwood Community Resource Centre was very appreciative of the Jubilee Fund’s support. Without the Fund’s bridge financing, they would have had to terminate their two program staff and cancel all their programming and activities over the summer. In addition, they are grateful for the opportunity to partner with other groups including Manitoba Search and Rescue, City of Winnipeg and Youth for Christ.
