The Northern Star Worker Co-op Inc.

Northern Star Worker Co-opNorthern Star is a worker-based cooperative, located at 211 Isabel Street. The co-op manufactures star blankets and other garments. The origins of Northern Star go back to the late 1980s when a sewing club was started at the North End Women’s Resource Centre to mend used clothing as a volunteer social activity.

In 2002, the Jubilee Fund support was needed to help the business:

  • Meet its working capital requirement in order to produce inventory for summer sales opportunities at the 2002 North American Indigenous Games.
  • test long-term market prospects through the summer sales and also investigate other market possibilities
  • explore ways of upgrading product quality and improving productivity.

Viola at Northern StarThe Fund provided the business with mentors to help improve its financial and management capacity. This service was provided free of charge by members of the Jubilee Fund Project Identification and Support Committee.
