 Spence Neighbourhood Association

A Social Justice Investment for the Jubilee Fund

388 Spence StThe Jubilee Fund partnered with the Spence Neighbourhood Association (SNA) and the University of Winnipeg to provide affordable housing in an emerging part of the city. The Jubilee Fund provided the financing for two houses that were moved and renovated, providing badly needed residential properties.

The two houses were located on Langside Street where the University of Winnipeg is building its new Environmental Sciences Building and a new Student Housing Complex. The University of Winnipeg gave the two houses to the Spence Neighbourhood Association. The two homes were in excellent condition, one was built less than five years ago, while the other had extensive renovations done two years ago. In December, 2007 the houses were lifted from their foundation and moved to 580 Furby Street and 598 Balmoral Street. The Jubilee Fund provided the enabling financing for the move and renovations. A number of families have indicated their desire to purchase these homes.

Don Miedema, Housing Coordinator at the Spence Neighbourhood Association said, “This is a big move for our community. Skyrocketing housing prices are making it very hard to develop affordable housing in our area. This project will help meet a great need and help grow our community. It probably would not have been possible without someone like the Jubilee Fund getting involved.”

“This is exactly the type of ethical investing the Jubilee Fund was created for,” says Doug Mackie, Chair of the Jubilee Fund Credit Committee. “It’s a real community-builder and the Spence Neighbourhood Association, has a strong and successful track-record of developing infill projects in the community. The Jubilee Fund strives to support these types of community endeavors and we are very happy to be working with SNA in achieving these goals.”
